Let’s Talk Teeth: Dental Health, Hygiene, and Science

Molars and canines and bicuspids, oh my! Trying to teach kids about teeth and their proper care can be a bit daunting at times. Don’t worry, though. Trio Orthodontics has you covered! And, best of all, we come to you! We’ve created two fun, engaging, and interactive 30-minute presentations in which our Team visits your school to teach students about dental health and science. We call these visits “Tooth Talks,” and each program is geared specifically towards a particular age group including everything from presentation material and activities all the way through gift bag contents!

When it comes to teeth, Trio Orthodontics is your go-to expert.

That’s because caring for and talking about teeth is what we do – all day, every day! As an extension of our #TrioGives program and our continued passion for our local communities, Tooth Talks allow us another great way to give back. Our Tooth Talk Team is made up of fully trained, educated, and certified orthodontists, dental hygienists, clinical orthodontic assistants, and records technicians. They’re able to partner with local elementary and middle schools to bring the knowledge to them and teach about good dental hygiene and dental science.

We currently offer two different types of Tooth Talks tailored to fit students as snugly as their custom retainers:

2nd Grade: Dental Hygiene

5th Grade: Dental Science

2nd Grade: Dental Hygiene

This Tooth Talk is designed to be applicable for 1st-3rd graders and focuses on overall dental hygiene. The goal for this presentation is for students to learn all about the formation and loss of baby teeth vs. adult teeth, proper brushing and flossing techniques, including an interactive demonstration complete with volunteers, and the different parts of a tooth and importance of protecting their smile!

Dental hygiene is an important part of daily life, but without the proper understanding of how to care for them, your teeth may not last as long as they’re intended to! In this presentation, we focus on several key points to make sure that teeth stay happy and healthy. We cover fun topics such as:

  • What is a dentist?
  • What is an orthodontist?
  • How many baby teeth do we have? How do we get adult teeth?
  • Brushing and flossing
  • Anatomy of a tooth
  • How do we protect our teeth when we play sports?

5th Grade: Dental Science

Our 5th grade program (also great for 4th graders!) provides a brief review of healthy brushing and flossing practices, but focuses primarily on the “why” behind these and additional dental health practices. The Dental Science presentation includes live and pre-recorded experiments to aid in teaching students the science behind sugars, plaque and enamel, as well as the “why” of mouthguard wear, regular dental visits, and overall proper dental health. Additionally, to maintain student focus and optimize learning, our 5th Grade presentation includes regular interactive questions with prizes for correct answers!

The common theme of “Okay, but why?” plays its part throughout the presentation. If the teacher is interested, we offer a pre-presentation experiment that the students are able to enjoy a week leading up to the Tooth Talk in order to provide them a baseline for some of the subjects that we’ll be covering. These include questions such as:

  • Why do we brush?
  • What is plaque?
  • How is fluoride in our toothpaste beneficial?
  • Why do we need to go to the dentist?
  • What is the purpose of wearing a mouthguard?
  • Why do dentists and orthodontists use x-rays?
